ActionScript3 for Flash 8ball
Saturday, May 28th, 2005Today i can saw on Flashcoders mailinglist photos from 8Ball presentation in France. There is interesting picture with information about “ActionScript 3″. After conference Mike Chambers told, that this is bug, but why such bug should appears in new product in which is not new ActionScript. I don’t know, but if there is no AS 3.0, no Actionscript 3 should not be displayed in new Flash IDE. We will see
Other information I can read from
http://chloridrik.free.fr/photos/flashfestival2005/" alt="photo gallery from 8ball presentation" title="photo gallery from 8ball presentation" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/chloridrik.free.fr');">photo gallery from 8ball presentation is when should be flash player 8 released. I just guess by this photo, that it should be in June (do you think, am I right?).
If you have better information, let me know.

As I posted on FlashCoders:

Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but I was not lying to you. It was a bug.
As i stated in the presentation, the next version of the player has a lot of new cool APIs, but the core language is not undergoing major changes.

Hi,
We haven’t announced specific dates for this, but our CFO has said in our quarterly results there will be a major release “late summer”. Note: she didn’t say if that was summer in the Northern of Southern hemisphere, so those of us in the product team still have some wiggle room
Reality is: we are working on building a rock solid, mind blowing release and we aren’t going to rush it out the door, but we sure are excited to share it with the world.

Yes. I stated during the presentation that we are planning to release 8ball and maelstrom late summer / early fall of this year.
Good catch on the slide. I didnt realize that was off so much.

Everyone chill.
It will be out … when it’s out … lest we have another “Updater 2″ on our hands.

Whats possibly more interesting is that box just below that says “Document class” - does this mean each movie will have a “code behind”??

My interest is peaked by that comment as well. One would deduct from that image that we will soon be able to have a class that exists as root (been crossing my fingers), maybe we will be extending ‘Stage’?

hmm a Document Class… I would guess that this would represent more of a standardized way to structure your work. Document is maybe not the best idea for it as the Flash Player’s DOM is already fully represented.
Maybe it will be more of an Application class. Something that will recieve all of the proper start up events and the like. Flash could really benefit from that, as many different people have many different ways to structure their work.

I think that setting is probably just a simple way to extend the _root MovieClip class principally in the same way you would extend it with defining a “Linkage -> AS 2.0 Class” to a MovieClip Symbol in the IDE.

I spotted that graph on their Flash Framework whitepaper. Kevin Lynch commented to clarify things and it seems to be have been a misprint of sorts. We’re still on for late summer, which could also mean September.
More here.
