Janus - swf meets .Net 2

Monday, November 5th, 2007

I’ve never heard of Janus (except Roman mythology - Janus is the name of an ancient Roman god who had two faces looking into different directions.). But it looks pretty much interesting. Till now I’ve used just Zinc, SWF Studio and now AIR, but inside of Janus there are features which are not inside of other “Flash exe makers” I’m aware of…

This is description from their site:

“Why fiddling around with different tools when you can simply have one? If you are a Flash/Flex developer, you can take your ideas to the next dimension, taking the expressiveness of the Flash platform to a Windows desktop application, inside a Windows Mobile PDA or inside a Symbian cellphone. Janus is not simply a “wrapper”, an “exe-generator”, a “swf2exe” that takes your swf and create an executable file, Janus allows you to use extra functions not available to Flash/Flex to crash the limit and increase the sheer power at your disposal. Janus adds an industry leading 2000+ methods/properties to your ActionScript code following pure ActionScript syntax. Simply walk throught the online manual and start dreaming! ”

I’ve have tried their examples and they work nice. Just imagine, you can now support FTP, SMTP, 3D exploring, win processes, audio mixer, image tools, watch file system for changes, make screenshots, communicate with serial port, debugging with XRay, record sound, convert powerpoint to swf, work with mySQL and many other feateres. There are just 2000+ methods

Try it for yourself and enjoy…

I tried Janus a while back and it’s not bad. I’m still more adept at using SWF Studio and may just be biased to make a switch.
