Flash 8 - performance increase 10988.2%

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

Uff :) I know this sounds pretty good, but this is performance increase in
StringAdd: Use the += operator to append to a string 10,000 times = 10988.2% (from 3770 ms in FP7 to 34 ms in FP8) according Sample Flash Player Microbenchmark Tests from Macromedia site.

Another “Uff” increase is in Regular Expressions Library: Run regular expressions = 2254.05% (from 38,983 ms in FP7 to 1656 ms in FP8)

See whole Microbenchmark test results table

And read articles Performance Improvements in Flash Player 8 as well…

Enjoy.

Errr… now exactly what flash RegularExpressionLibrary was it that I am supposed to be so impressed by.

AFAIK there is no such thing so why did they bother spending time to make Flash 8 faster to do something that is has even got.

and note that they did the string test in the “standalone” player. Try it in the web browser yourself. You won’t see 1000% increase. Sorry..

For the string concatenation test I’m seeing more like 850ms vs. 140ms which is not 1000%..

Some more info on RegEx Engines in Flash: http://www.jurjans.lv/flash/RegExp.html?CFID=4139310&CFTOKEN=67581069

Also, if you really wanted to get creative you could use an External Interface to leverage the Javascript RegEx Engine

Sigh… poor Mac. Flash you are a gorgeous thing, but a tiny thorn in the side of me that loves my Mac. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad it’s gotten better… Although I was shocked to discover there USED to be a few things the Mac player did faster…
